Earlier this month on IFB's forum, a member posted a really good question on the blogging etiquette forum.
Question: Do you guys post about your personal life on your blog?
I think I can speak for a majority of us when I say that it's definitely a personal preference. Luckily, there are no guidelines when it comes to blogging. So incorporating personal experiences is a great way to connect with your reader. However, the discussion on the particular question was so interesting. Some people said that they keep it mainly "business" regarding fashion, style or whatever it is they blog about. Some said that they add little tidbits here and there to give the readers a peek into their lives. Everyone had such a valid point about discussing personal life on their blog, but it really got me thinking about my own.
I love my blog, it's like my personal style diary that gets shared with the world. However, I also enjoy writing about my personal life. I've been writing online since I was 10 years old. There is something so therapeutic about writing but for me, it was nice to see that I was not alone in my feelings, hence posting online arose. Now that my blog has grown a bit and I'm obviously not 10 years old, I've gotten amazing and touching feedback from posts where very personal issues were discussed. It comforts me to know that people have experienced something similar and shared how they've coped. However, I do draw a line. I usually don't go into extreme detail and I try to keep the tone fairly neutral because we all know how feelings can change. I also don't incorporate where I work or talk badly about my job. I have a level of professionalism, you know? :)
What's most important for me is to be real. I think the last thing people want to read is someone so robotic and monotone that you can't believe it's a person. I enjoy reading blogs that not only does the person have a great sense of style but has feelings, sass, and experiences that their willing to share.
How about you? If you have a blog, where do you draw the line? If your a blog reader, what do you enjoy reading about most? Personal, professional or both?
and now I'll leave you with something I find quite humorous. (the best starts around 1:16)
